News from the AGM
Michael Singer awarded life membership. He joins Bernard Robinson who was the only person in the society with this accolade.
Enclosed below is a copy of an email received from Michael in response to receive the news.
I was extremely surprised and naturally excited by the honour which was bestowed upon me on Thursday evening at the A.G.M.
I joined the society in 1967 and have officiated as Referee and Touch Judge for over 40 years both in the Amateur game and in the Professional ranks. I actually officiated at the first ever BARLA National Cup Final played at Halifax (Thrum Hall). Throughout my sports career I was fortunate to receive major honours Nationally and Internationally and at all times I was proud to belong to The Leeds And District Referees Society as I have always said that honours reflect on the Society.
At no time did I approach any game differently because I prepared mentally and physically for an under 14 game as I did for Wembley and gave the same effort to each one. There is so much more that I could say but I am grateful to the Management Committee and the Members for this accolade and at a time of my life when I thought that I would never receive any more recognition.
Sincere wishes to everyone for now and always,
Mike

Clubs will be reported to the league as there has been many cases of abuse of Officials going unreported. The RESPECT campain should treated as that. The RFL has recently advised that Officials should clamp down on this.
Any club found abusing Match Officials will be asked to explain themselves in front of the Societies Management Committee.
Please remember that we have referees under the age of 18 an any abuse of these Officials will be reported to The RFL under the Child Protection Policy.
Please however note that Match Officials will use common sence. They have been advised to speak to the Touchline Manager to ask that they control any issues in the first instance.

RFL clarify position on bladed boots
The RFL have issued the following clarification relating to the use of boots with blade style grips on the soles.
The usage of such equipment was reviewed by the RFL two seasons ago and as such there is currently no conclusive evidence that would prove that bladed boots in proper condition are any more dangerous than boots with studs in proper condition.
Match Officials are required to check all players’ boots and playing apparel prior to kick-off in any match and if they consider any item of equipment to be dangerous they will order it to be removed. This applies to boots with blades which are not in a safe condition in the same way as it does to boots with studs. Thus these measures prevent players taking the field with unsafe equipment.
The RFL believes that the issues relating to the use of boots with blade style grips on the soles are something that sports governing bodies and international Federations should collectively consider further and we would be delighted to work in partnership with any such organisations to progress this.
Within Rugby League, the RFL will raise the issue at the forthcoming meeting of the Community Board so that all sections of the sport gain a full understanding of the situation.
